Stories from the commander's achives
A funeral director was scrambling to find an escort team for a family that as per their religious belief needed to lay to rest their loved one within 24 hours.
Thankfully we were able to accommodate them and the rest is history.
One comes to mind: We had the privilege to escort a Navajo Nation Chief from the Phoenix Metropolitan area to the Navajo Nation near Monument Valley.
Besides being honored to partake in the ceremony, it made me feel like I was experiencing history. “Look for an “indian” on a horse, he will lead you to the gravesite”. (This is literally what I was told.) A young lady was translating what the elders were telling us and we learned that we had just escorted one of the WWII code talkers. As a veteran myself, I cannot begin to express the pride I felt.
After the service, we were invited to share a meal with the family before the long journey home, Indian fried bread made fresh in front of our very eyes.
We also had a few teddy bears in our patrol cars and gifted those to the children, after they explored our vehicles playing with the lights.
It was one of the most memorable days ever.
